Guard Llamas at Work

No sheep farm is complete without guard animals.  We have a high population of coyote here, and had to decide between a guard dog, donkeys, or llamas.  I have worked with many types of animals before…. but never camelids.  So of course, I got two!

Meet Carlos, a 13 year-old gelding that started out as a 4H animal.  Super sweet, gentle to people, he still bosses the other llama around when it comes to grain or treats.

Carlos

His buddy is Calypso.  Aggressive and dominating to anyone he doesn’t know…. he and I have developed a good relationship.  He comes to me for treats, accepts handling now, and has learned to lead.  I trust him to keep the flock safe!  I love my llama boys!
